A rent receipt is a document that records and proves that rent has been paid by the tenant for a determined period (week, month)

Many states require landlords to give tenants a receipt for the rent. 

Uses for a receipt:

  • Protects tenants who pay in cash, who can prove the rent has been paid, if challenged.
  • It is crucial for tenants to keep records. It documents and keeps track of all rent payment transactions. Which is very important.
  • When filing their taxes, renters can use the receipt to back up their renters' tax credit deduction.

A simple rent receipt form should include the following:

  • Rent period

  • Signature of the person who received the rent payment (landlord/manager)

Rental property’s managers should give the tenant a receipt when he/she makes a payment. 

A receipt offers additional documentation that the house or apartment rent was paid.
